Cyathelia was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: Q Plei R Sepkoski's reference number: 796]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Oculininae by Wells (1956); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
