Microcetus ambiguus

Taxonomy
Phoca ambigua was named by Meyer (1840) [Kellogg (1923) states that the type specimen is in the Palaontologische Sammlung at Munich, Germany]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Doberg bei Bünde, which is in a Chattian marine mixed carbonate-siliciclastic in the Doberg Formation of Germany. It is the type species of Microcetus.

It was recombined as Squalodon ambiguus by Trouessart (1898) and Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Neosqualodon ambiguus by Kellogg (1922); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Squalodontidae by Zittel (1925); it was considered a nomen dubium by Dal Piaz (1916) and Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); it was recombined as Microcetus ambiguus by Kellogg (1923), Rothausen (1961), Sanders et al. (1982) and Tanaka and Fordyce (2015).
