Rotaforma was named by Pessagno (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l K Ceno-u]. It is the type genus of Rotaformidae.

It was assigned to Rotaformidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
