Taxonomy
Delphinapterus borealis was named by Peale (1848). It is extant. Its type specimen is none designated. Its type locality is Astoria, west, which is in a Holocene marine horizon in Oregon.

It was recombined as Delphinus borealis by Cassin (1858) and Jefferson and Newcomer (1993); it was recombined as Leucorhamphus borealis by Dall (1874); it was recombined as Tursio borealis by True (1889); it was recombined as Lissodelphis borealis by Norris and Prescot (1961), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Barnes (1977), Vidal (1991), Rice (1998), Mead and Brownell (2005), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008), Perrin et al. (2013) and Jefferson (2021).
