Discocoenia was named by Tomes (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett-u J m Sepkoski's reference number: 833]. Its type is Discocoenia bononiensis.

It was assigned to Amphiastreidae by Wells (1956); to Stylophyllidae by Beauvais (1970); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
