Taxonomy
Stegopelta was named by Williston (1905). Its type is Stegopelta landerensis. It was considered monophyletic by Vickaryous et al. (2004).
It was synonymized subjectively with Palaeoscincus by Huene (1909); it was synonymized subjectively with Nodosaurus by Coombs (1978), Coombs (1978) and Tumanova (1987).
