Taxonomy
Cetotherium megalophysum was named by Cope (1895). Its type specimen is USNM 10593, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Plesiocetus megalophysum by Kellogg (1925); it was recombined as Plesiocetopsis megalophysum by Hay (1930) and Abel (1938); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Cetotherioidea by Steeman (2007); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Cetotheriidae by Goldin and Startsev (2014) and Marx and Fordyce (2015).
