Elasmophyllia was named by d'Achiardi (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: K Nc T Eo-m Sepkoski's reference number: 2,806].

It was assigned to Placosmiliinae by Wells (1956); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Montlivaltiidae by Baron-Szabo (2006).
