Ellipsasteria was named by Roniewicz (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-u Sepkoski's reference number: 658]. It is not extant. Its type is Ellipsasteria gracilis.

It was assigned to Heliastraeidae by Roniewicz (1970); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
