Ellipsocoenia was named by d'Orbigny (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: J u K Apti-u Sepkoski's reference number: 821,826].

It was assigned to Latomeandriidae by Beauvais (1972); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Latomeandridae by Baron-Szabo (2021).

R.C. Baron-Szabo 2021Colonial, massive; hemispherical, plocoid, cerio-plocoid when corallites crowded, submeandroid arrangement during intracalicular budding stages present or absent. Corallites often projecting. Budding intracalicular and extracalicular-marginal. Costosepta compact to irregularly perforated, nonconfluent to confluent.
Lateral flanks of septa have small-sized (up to around 50 μm tall) granules and pennulae-like ornamentations. Paliform structures irregularly present. Columella spongy or formed by fusion of axial ends of septa. Endothecal dissepiments vesicular; exothecal dissepiments present or absent. Intertrabecular distance ranging between 80 and
150 μm. Wall synapticulothecal, well developed, sometimes forming a stereozone, or incomplete.
