Hamatopus was named by Lilienstern (1939).

It was synonymized subjectively with Rhynchosauroides by Baird (1957) and Demathieu (1966).

It was assigned to Lacertilia by Kuhn (1958); and to Rhynchocephalia by Kuhn (1963).
