Rhynchosauroides was named by Maidwell (1911) [named in Maidwell, 1911]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Rhynchosauroides rectipes.

It was assigned to Rhynchocephalia by Kuhn (1963) and Kuhn (1971); to Rhynchosauroidea by Demathieu and Haubold (1972); to Sphenodontidae by Smith and Klinger (1995); to Rhynchosauroidae by Haubold (1974), Ptaszynski (2000) and Ptaszyński and Niedźwiedzki (2004); to Lepidosauria by Olsen (1995) and Gand and Demathieu (2005); and to Sphenodonti by Hunt and Lucas (2007).
