Epistreptophyllum was named by Milaschewitsch (1876) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie-u K Albi Sepkoski's reference number: 2,682]. It is not extant. Its type is Epistreptophyllum commune.

It was assigned to Dermosmiliidae by Fischer (1969) and Roniewicz (1976).
