Mantellisaurus atherfieldensis

Reptilia

Taxonomy
Iguanodon atherfieldensis was named by Hooley (1925). Its type specimen is BMNH R.5764, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is cliff fall near Atherfield (BMNH), which is in a Barremian/Aptian terrestrial shale in the Vectis Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was misspelled as Mantellisaurus atherfieldiensis by Hübner and Rauhut (2007), Kim et al. (2009), Gates et al. (2014) and Bell et al. (2019); it was recombined as Mantellisaurus atherfieldensis by Paul (2007), Sánchez-Hernández et al. (2007), Naish and Martill (2007), Contreras et al. (2007), Paul (2008), Luque et al. G. S. Paul 2007Adults possibly modest sized, 7 m, mass 1+ tonnes. Overall lightly constructed. Accessory palpebral absent. Quadrate shaft curved. Maximum tooth positions 23 in maxilla, 20 in dentary. Neural spines of dorsals, sacrals, and caudals tall. Posterior dorsal centra not compressed anteroposteriorly. Six true sacrals. Scapula narrow and constricted at middle of blade. Acromion process placed distally and directed ventrally. Coracoid small relative to scapula. Forelimb 55% of hindlim length. Deltopectoral crest of humerus fairly large and incipiently hatchet-shaped. Manual spike and other unguals small. Prepubis deep. Femoral fourth trochanter not spiked (Table 4.1).
G. S. Paul 2008Probably modest sized as adults. Overall lightly constructed. Premaxillary tip to anterior orbital rim/latter to paraoccipital process tip length ratio w1.25; dentary pre-coronoid process length/minimum depth ratio under 5. Rostrum subtriangular in lateral view. Maxillary process of premaxilla shallow. Dorsal apex of maxilla set posteriorly. Antorbital fossa and fenestra reduced. Lacrimal short, does not contact nasal. Lateral temporal fenestra moderate in size. Posterior portion of jugal short. Quadratojugal short. Quadrate tall, transversely narrow, shaft curved, lateral foramen set high, dorso-posterior buttress small. Diastema absent. Tooth positions 23 in maxilla, 22 in dentary. Dorso-sacral/hindlimb length ratio w1. Posterior dorsal centra not compressed antero-posteriorly. 7 fused sacrals. Scapula blade narrow and constricted at middle of blade, base rather narrow, acromion process placed rather dorsally and directed anteriorly. Forelimb w50% of hindlimb length. Deltopectoral crest of humerus distally placed, fairly large and incipiently hatchet shaped. Manual phalanx 1 of digit I absent, pollex spike and other unguals moderate in size. Pelvis *relatively large. Main body of ilium deep. Prepubic process of pubis deep. Femoral shaft curved. Metatarsal I present, II short. Distal phalanges of toes *not strongly abbreviated.
G. S. Paul 2008 (Dollodon bampingi)Probably modest sized as adults at 6+ m and 1+ tonnes. Overall lightly constructed. Premaxillary tip to anterior orbital rim/latter to paraoccipital process tip length ratio ~1.6 via elongation of posterior nasal, maxillary process of premaxilla and maxilla; dentary pre-coronoid process length/minimum depth ratio over 5. Maxillary process of premaxilla shallow. Dorsal apex of maxilla set posteriorly. Antorbital fossa and fenestra reduced. Lacrimal short, does not contact nasal. Accessory palpebral absent. Posterior border of occiput straight. Lateral temporal fenestra small. Posterior portion of jugal short. Quadratojugal short. Quadrate short, transversely narrow, shaft curved, lateral foramen set high, dorso-posterior buttress small. Diastema short. Dorso-sacral/hindlimb length ratio w1.2. Posterior dorsal centra not compressed antero-posteriorly. Neural spines of dorsals, sacrals and caudals form moderately tall sail. 7 fused sacrals. Scapula blade narrow and constricted at middle of blade, base rather narrow, acromion process placed ventrally and directed distally. Forelimb w55% of hindlimb length. Deltopectoral crest of humerus distally placed, fairly large and incipiently hatchet shaped. Manus narrow. Manual phalanx 1 of digit I present, pollex spike and other unguals moderate in size. Main body of ilium shallow. Prepubic process of pubis deep. Femoral shaft moderately curved. Metatarsal I present, II long.
A. T. McDonald 2012Basal hadrosauriform distinguished from all other iguanodontians by the following unique combination of characters: maxillary process of jugal tapers towards lacrimal and maxillary facets, with sinuous ventral and dorsal margins (based upon NHMUK R11521 and MIWG 6344); dorsal margin of scapula straight; caudal end of scapula expanded into paddle- like shape, with dorsal and ventral margins that diverge towards the caudal margin; dorsal margin of ilium straight; thickened and laterally-bulging everted rim along dorsal margin of ilium dorsal to ischial peduncle; break in slope along the dorsal margin of the postacetabular process; shaft of ischium straight (based upon IRSNB 1551).
J. A. Bonsor et al. 2023Mantellisaurus atherfieldensis differs from all other known iguanodontians in possessing the following autapomorphies: (1) a tabulate lacrimal process of the maxilla, situated posterior to the ascending process in lateral view; (2) a pronounced, hook-shaped acromion process with an acute internal angle; and (3) a prominent dorsal ridge on the anterior end of the nasal process of the premaxilla.
