Eusmilia was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Eusmiliinae by Wells (1956); to Meandrinidae by Veron (2000); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Caryophylliidae by López-Pérez (2005).
