Stephanospermum was named by Brongniart (1828) [The original description of this genus had no figures; Brongniart 1881 had some figures; Renault 1896 provided earliest adequate description]. It is not extant. Its type is Stephanospermum achenioides.

It was assigned to Plantae by Andrews (1970).
