Scaldicetus was named by Du Bus (1867) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It was considered monophyletic by Uhen et al. (2008).
It was synonymized subjectively with Balaenodon by Lydekker (1887).
