Gigantostylis was named by Frech (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Rhae Sepkoski's reference number: 919]. Its type is Gigantostylis epigonus.

It was assigned to Procyclolitidae by Wells (1956); to Gigantostyliidae by Roniewicz (1989); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
