Heterastraea was named by Tomes (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett J Bajo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2,919]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Stylophyllidae by Roniewicz and Michalík (1998); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Oppelismiliidae by Roniewicz (2009).
