Rytiodus capgrandi was named by Lartet (1866). Its type specimen is MNHN MBA 1-9, a set of teeth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lot-et-Garonne, which is in a Miocene marine horizon in France.
It was recombined as Halitherium capgrandi by Cope (1883).
