Hispaniastraea was named by Turnsek et al. (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine-u J Plie-l Sepkoski's reference number: 658,825]. Its type is Hispaniastraea murciana.

It was assigned to Amphiastraeidae by Prinz (1991); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
