Ptychoceratodus was named by Jaekel (1926). Its type is Ceratodus serratus.
It was assigned to Ptychoceratodontinae by Apesteguia et al. (2007); to Ceratodontidae by Schultze (2004) and Apesteguía et al. (2012); to Ceratodontoidei by Skrzycki (2015); and to Ptychoceratodontidae by Martin (1982), Cuny and Ramboer (1991), Agnolin et al. (2017) and Panzeri (2023).
It was assigned to Ptychoceratodontinae by Apesteguia et al. (2007); to Ceratodontidae by Schultze (2004) and Apesteguía et al. (2012); to Ceratodontoidei by Skrzycki (2015); and to Ptychoceratodontidae by Martin (1982), Cuny and Ramboer (1991), Agnolin et al. (2017) and Panzeri (2023).
