Taxonomy
Appalachiosaurus montgomeriensis was named by Carr et al. (2005) [McWayne Center, Birmingham, AL]. Its type specimen is RMM 6670 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Turnipseed Dinosaur Site (RMM), which is in a Campanian/Campanian marine marl in the Demopolis Chalk Formation of Alabama.

Carr et al. 2005Tyrannosauroid possessing the following autapomorphies: wide jugal process of ectopterygoid; caudal pneumatic recess of palatine situated rostral to caudal margin of vomeropterygoid process; articular surface for lacrimal of palatine situated distally; and prominent lip extending over dorsal margin of articular surface of pedal unguals.
