Amioidea was named by Bonaparte (1838). Its type is Amia.

It was assigned to Holostei by Gardiner (1960); and to Amiiformes by Grande and Bemis (1998), Kriwet (2005), Cavin et al. (2007) and Bogan et al. (2010).
