Taxonomy
Lepidotus occidentalis was named by Leidy (1856). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Judith River badlands (USGS), which is in a Campanian/Campanian terrestrial horizon in the Judith River Formation of Montana.
It was recombined as Lepisosteus occidentalis by Cope (1877), Hay (1902), Estes (1964), Estes (1976) and Bryant (1989); it was recombined as Clastes occidentalis by Cope (1877); it was recombined as Atractosteus occidentalis by Wiley (1976) and Peng et al. (2001).
