Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
J. R. Horner 1988 (Brachylophosaurus goodwini)Deep and rounded dorsal depression or pit at or near the junction of the frontal and postorbital; dorsally concave upper process of nasal; posterolateral surface of nasal reaching orbital rim; quadratojugal process of the jugal parallel with postorbital process.
A. Prieto-Márquez et al. 2006Brachylophosaurus canadensis is rediagnosed on the basis of the following autapomorphies: nasals greatly developed into paddle-like solid crest extending caudodorsally, overhanging dorsal region of skull; nasals possessing anteroposteriorly oriented groove terminating in elongated foramen, located medial to prefrontal; prefrontal projected posteriorly, resting dorsomedially over anterior process of postorbital and, more posteriorly, extending ventromedially, underlying nasal; only anterior sharp tip of lacrimal contacting maxilla; jugal with ventrally projected semicircular flange deeper overall than that of M. peeblesorum but more lightly built than in remaining hadrosaurines; extremely elongated, rod-like anterodorsal process of maxilla projecting medial to narial cavity along most of anteroposterior length of external naris; anteroposteriorly short exoccipital-supraoccipital roof posterior and dorsal to foramen magnum.
A. Prieto-Marquez 2013Generic and Specific Characters. Skull (side view) high in front, subrectangular, medium breadth; premaxillae high; beak subrectangular in outline, down-turned in front, not reflected; nasal orifice oval, relatively high, no depressed area for nasal organ; nasal parallel to tooth row, extending back over the frontals to form a Saurolophus-like crest overhanging the parietals; frontals short, mid-portion covered by nasals but outer tip forming part of orbital rim; occipital region narrow, slightly overhanging occipital condyle; paroccipital process of exoccipital heavy and long; maxilla relatively high in front with long anterior maxillary process fitting in groove in premiaxilla; lachrymal large, triangular, with tip extending far forward; jugal slender, posterior part narrow and strongly upturned; orbit high; lateral temporal fossa about three times as high as wide; quadrate moderately long and slightly curved; prevomer subtriangular, much longer than high, very thin; dentary moderately high, edentulous portion equal to about half the length of the tooth magazine, upper edge carries forward at about same level as triturating surface then turns down
very sharply; enamel face of dentary teeth about three times as high as broad, lingual-buccal diameter greater than fore-and-aft breadth; vertical rows of teeth inore numerous in the maxilla (about 49) than in the dentary (about 39) ; skeleton massive; cervical vertebrae low and broad; anterior dorsals with neural spines of moderate height but great fore-and-aft diameter; forearm very long.
