Zhangheotherium quinquecuspidens
Taxonomy
Zhangheotherium quinquecuspidens was named by Hu et al. (1997). Its type specimen is IVPP V7466, a partial skeleton (partial skull and most of postcranial skeleton), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Zhangheotherium type, Jianshangou Valley, which is in a Barremian/Aptian lacustrine shale in the Yixian Formation of China. It is the type species of Zhangheotherium.

Hu et al. 1997 | A spalacotheriid symmetrodont (Fig. 2) with the dental formula 3×1×2×5/3×1×2×6; differing from all other known symmetrodonts in having a hypertrophied cusp B9 between the main cusp A and the stylocone (cusp B) (Fig. 2); distinguishable from other spalacotheriids in the conical shape of the main cusps and the lack of lingual and labial cingulids on the lower molars; distinctive from Spalacotherium in having more robust and rounded main cusps that lack connecting cristae; unique among early mammals in having fused sternebrae, and a posteriorly expanded xiphoid process. |
