Merycodontidae was named by Matthew (1904). It was considered paraphyletic by Janis and Manning (1998).

It was reranked as the subfamily Merycodontinae by Janis and Manning (1998).

It was assigned to Ruminantia by Gregory (1910); to Ruminantii by Jaekel (1911); and to Antilocapridae by Janis and Manning (1998).
