Taxonomy
Protognathosaurus was named by Olshevsky (1991). Its type is Protognathus oxyodon.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Upchurch et al. (2004).
It was assigned to Shunosaurinae by Dong (1997); to Sauropoda by Dong (1998); to Euhelopodinae by Martin-Rolland (1999); and to Cetiosauridae by Olshevsky (1992), Peng et al. (2005), Li et al. (2010) and Li et al. (2011).
