Protognathosaurus oxyodon

Taxonomy
Protognathus oxyodon was named by Zhang (1988). Its type specimen is CHG CV 00732, a mandible (left dentary), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Dashanpu Dinosaur Quarry [lower], which is in a Bajocian/Oxfordian lacustrine sandstone/mudstone in the Shaximiao Formation of China. It is the type species of Protognathus, Protognathosaurus.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Upchurch et al. (2004); it was recombined as Protognathosaurus oxyodon by Olshevsky (1991), Olshevsky (1992), Dong (1997), Martin-Rolland (1999), Peng et al. (2005) and Li et al. (2011).

Peng et al. 2005Medium-sized primitive sauropod recognized by thick and heavy dentary with a deepened anterior end and gradually decreased dorsal margin; middle portion of dentary relatively contracted; meckelian canal quite deep and long; elongate dentition with 19~20 dentary teeth; slender and pointed dentary tooth crown with an undeveloped median ridge, metrical anterior and posterior ridges and 4~5 obvious serrations.
