Spongosilicarmiger was named by Kozur (1984) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-l Tr Carn Sepkoski's reference number: 938]. Its type is Spongosilicarmiger italicus. It is the type genus of Spongosilicarmigeridae.
It was assigned to Spongosilicarmigeridae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
