Margarophyllia was named by Volz (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-u Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,919,920]. It is the type genus of Margarophylliidae.
It was assigned to Procyclolitidae by Wells (1956); to Margarophylliidae by Roniewicz (1989) and Turnsek (1997); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
