Montastraea was named by Blainville (1830) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 796]. It is extant.

It was corrected as Montastrea by Sepkoski (2002); it was misspelled as Montastrea by Kiessling et al. (2011) and Huang et al. (2014).

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); to Faviidae by Wells (1956), Veron (2000) and Kiessling et al. (2011); and to Montastraeidae by Huang et al. (2014).
