Morphastrea was named by d'Orbigny (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: K Vala K Ceno Sepkoski's reference number: 849].

It was synonymized subjectively with Thamnasteria by Wells (1956).

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Agariciidae by Baron-Szabo (2008).
