Neocoenia was named by Hackemesser (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant , K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 818]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Placocoeniidae by Baron-Szabo (2006).
