Oplosaurus was named by Gervais (1852).

It was synonymized subjectively with Cetiosaurus by Dollo (1889); it was synonymized subjectively with Pelorosaurus by Lydekker (1889), Lydekker (1890), Huene (1909), Romer (1956), Romer (1966), Steel (1970) and McIntosh (1990); it was synonymized subjectively with Ornithopsis by Zittel (1890).

It was assigned to Mosasauridae by Gervais (1852), Gervais (1853) and Gervais (1859); to Sauropoda by Winkler (1893); to Morosauridae by von Zittel (1911); to Sauropoda by Upchurch et al. (2004); to Camarasauridae by Sánchez-Hernández et al. (2007); and to Macronaria by Naish and Martill (2007).
