Avicula pellucida was named by Gabb (1864) [Lower-Upper Eocene; California; Synonyms: Avicula pellucida TYPE SPECIMEN: Lectotype used]. Its type specimen is UCMP 11983, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Pteria pellucida by Squires (2001).
