Pachyseris was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Agariciidae by Wells (1956); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
