Taxonomy
Gumbatomys asifi was named by Hartenberger (1982). Its type specimen is GSP-UM 277, a tooth (m3 inf. dext.), and it is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Gumbatomys.

J.L. Hartenberger 1982Brachyodont ctenodactylid but with hypsodont tendency. Lower cheek tooth pattern comparable to Karakoromys with development of a posterior crest of the protoconid (psuedomesolophid of authors); the anterior part of the tooth has U shaped crests. Posterior part shows ectolophid connected with the middle part of pseudomesolophid. Posterior cingulum is crescentiform.
