Selenichnus was named by Hitchcock (1858). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Selenichnus falcatus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Batrachopus by Hunt and Lucas (2006).

It was assigned to Batrachia by Hitchcock (1898); to Grallatoridae by Lull (1904); to Theropoda by Lull (1917); to Selenichnidae by Lull (1915), Lull (1953), Kuhn (1958), Kuhn (1963), Haubold (1969), Haubold (1971) and Haubold (1974); and to Theropoda by Romero Molina et al. (2003) and Rainforth (2007).
