Pentacoenia was named by d'Orbigny (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut-l K Apti-l Sepkoski's reference number: 821]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyathophoridae by Löser (2010).
