Peplosmilia was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm K Ceno Sepkoski's reference number: 2].

It was assigned to Placosmiliinae by Wells (1956); to Axosmiliidae by Turnsek (1997); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Montlivaltiidae by Baron-Szabo (2006).
