Phacellocoenia was named by Alloiteau and Tissier (1858) [Sepkoski's age data: J T Than-l Sepkoski's reference number: 86,658]. Its type is Phacellocoenia bazerquei.

It was assigned to Stylinidae by Alloiteau and Tissier (1958); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Faviidae by Baron-Szabo (2006).
