Placocoenia was named by d'Orbigny (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 86,691]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Placocoeniidae by Baron-Szabo (2006).
