Taxonomy
Placocyathus was named by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l T Plio Sepkoski's reference number: 1110].

It was synonymized subjectively with Meandrina by Wells (1956); it was reranked as Meandrina (Placocyathus) by Kiessling (2008).

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); to Meandrina by Kiessling (2008); and to Caryophylliidae by Kiessling (2014).
