Taxonomy
Placophyllia was named by d'Orbigny (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: J m K Apti-l Sepkoski's reference number: 819]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Placophylliidae.

It was assigned to Placosmiliidae by Roniewicz (1976) and Turnsek (1997); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Placophylliidae by Morycowa and Misik (2005).
