Austrotriconodon was named by Bonaparte (1986). Its type is Austrotriconodon sepulvedai.
It was assigned to Triconodontidae by Bonaparte (1986) and Bonaparte (1990); to Austrotriconodontidae by Bonaparte (1992), Cifelli et al. (1998) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004); and to Meridiolestida by Gaetano et al. (2013).
