Derivation of the name: Boreal (Gr. boreas), meaning north, and Ilysia, a junior synonym of Anilius, meaning Northern Ilysia, referring to the occurrence of an aniliid in North America

Taxonomy
Borealilysia was named by Head (2020). Its type is Coniophis carinatus.

It was assigned to Aniliidae by Head (2020).

Synonyms
  • Coniophis platycarinatus was named by Hecht (1959). Its type specimen is AMNH 3827 (incomplete mid-thoracic vertebra) and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hyopsodus Hill, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

    It was considered a nomen dubium by Head (2020).
