Taxonomy
Stygiochelys estesi was named by Gaffney and Hiatt (1971). Its type specimen is AMNH 2601, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Near Glendive (Stygiochelys estesi holotype locality), which is in a Maastrichtian terrestrial horizon in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana. It is the type species of Stygiochelys.
