Protoheterastrea was named by Wells (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi Tr Nori-l Sepkoski's reference number: 919]. It is not extant. Its type is Hexastraea leonhardi.

It was corrected as Protoheterastraea by Stanley and Onoue (2015).

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); to Protoheterstraeidae by Roniewicz and Michalik (2002); and to Protoheterastraeidae by Stanley and Onoue (2015).
